Police on Friday arrested a youth from Swarupnagar of North 24-Parganas allegedly for killing a young Bangladeshi woman apparently duping her to help cross the Indo-Bangladesh border to return home.

Accused and tout Nichar Ali Mollah, 34, a resident of Bithari-Hakimpur village in North 24-Parganas, killed Bangladeshi national Sumaia Akhtar Brishti apparently to grab the money that she was carrying.

On Tuesday, the unidentified body of the woman, who was in her mid-20s and clad in jeans and a top, was found in a pool of blood with her throat slit inside an orchard close to the Indo-Bangladesh border in Gunrajpur village of Govindapur panchayat at Swarupnagar in North 24-Parganas. When her body was recovered, Brishti's hands and feet were tied with a nylon rope.

The police found a mobile phone and a bag at the spot. Basirhat police district administration formed a special probe team headed by SDPO, Baduria, Avijit Sinha.

The victim was a resident of the Shyampur area of Dhaka in Bangladesh, who sneaked into India illegally to work at a beauty parlour in Mumbai. On September 25 night, she was trying to return home crossing the border near Swarupnagar, when she was allegedly killed by Nichar.

The accused was produced before the additional chief judicial magistrate’s court in Basirhat, which ordered 10 days' police custody. After preliminary interrogation, sleuths claimed that the woman was killed with the intention to grab money she was carrying.

Police sources said that the victim’s mobile phone helped unravel the mystery behind the death.

Speaking to the media persons SP Basirhat Joby Thomas K. said: “The woman was a Bangladeshi national and had a good relationship with the accused. We arrested him and during preliminary interrogation, he confessed to his crime. However, we will interrogate him further to know what led to the murder.”
