Youth fatally thrashed for ‘carrying away kid’

A villager, who claimed to be the uncle of a three--year-old girl , whom Amzad was carrying, raised an alarm and some others intercepted the boy, who was tied and beaten up

A youth reportedly with psychological disorders, who was brutally assaulted by a group of people at a village under Falakata police station of Alipurduar district on Sunday, died in a hospital on Monday.

Deceased Amzad Hossain’s family members at Pinki Chowpathi area of Madarihat have filed a police complaint. Police have started a probe.Sources said that some residents of nearby Satpukuria village of Falakata saw Amzad carrying a three-year-old girl. Soon, a villager, who claimed to be the girl’s uncle, raised an alarm and some others intercepted Amzad.They tied his limbs and started beating him. Amzad collapsed eventually but the beatings continued. After some time, a team from Falakata police station reached there and rescued him.

He was admitted to the superspecialty hospital in Falakata and later shifted to the district hospital in Alipurduar. He died on Monday afternoon.Police during probe took the statement of the girl’s father.

“The youth tried to run away with my daughter. Some villagers panicked at this and attacked him. It is unfortunate that he lost his life in the attack,” said the girl’s father.

The girl also fell unwell and is under treatment at the superspecialty hospital.On Monday, Amzad’s family members filed a police complaint and said he had psychological problems.Senior police officers of the district said they were in search of those who assaulted Amzad.

“No one can ake the law into his own hands. They should have handed over the youth to police. If he had wrong intentions, we would have found it out. All those involved in the incident will be arrested,” said Y. Raghubamshi, the SP of Alipurduar.
