The foundation stone for Vidyasagar Setu was laid by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on this day.
The bridge is named after Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar, the social reformer, educationist and writer.
Construction of the bridge began on July 3, 1979, and commissioned on October 10, 1992.
It was the first cable-stayed bridge in India, the largest in Asia and the third largest in the world at that time. It is 823 metres long.
Four bridges have been built across the Hooghly. The most famous is the Howrah bridge, a familiar symbol of the city. The other two are Vivekananda Setu and Nivedita Setu.
