Brahmo Balika Shikshalaya, a school for girls, was established on this day by the Sadharan Brahmo Samaj on the 12th anniversary of the foundation of the Samaj.

The aim of the school was to impart intellectual training to girls based on religious and moral instruction. The objective was not just to equip women with the ability to pass examinations, but to educate them into being worthy citizens.

The most illustrious names from 19th century Bengal were among the founders of the school or were part of the school managing committee: Madhusudhan Sen, Upendra Kishore Roychowdhury, Dwarkanath Ganguly, Adinath Chatterjee, Umesh Chandra Dutta (secretary), Labanyaprabha Bose (assistant secretary), Sivnath Sastri, M.M. Bose and Umapada Rai. A boarding establishment was added on October 1 of the same year.
