On this day the battle of Carigat (or the battle of Arikera) was fought between Tipu Sultan of Mysore and the British East India forces.
Tipu Sultan was at a location between Arikera and Seringapatam.
Cornwallis attacked his army and won a complete victory. This battle was one of the early episodes in the series of encounters between Tipu Sultan and the British, known as the Third and Fourth Mysore Wars. In 1799, the British, led by Cornwallis, would defeat and kill Tipu Sultan.
An interesting feature of these battles was the weapons. Tipu Sultan used very sophisticated weaponry. The ammunition of the British came substantially from the Ichhapur gun factory in Bengal. During the Mysore wars, apparently the factory employed more than 2,000 labourers to make gunpowder. The labourers had worked out a pension scheme for those affected by accidents at work. Migrants from different parts of Bengal worked at the factory.
