On this day, Mir Jafar sat on the throne of Bengal, assisted by the British.

After June 23, when the Battle of Plassey had taken place, the British, led by Robert Clive, had virtually won control over Bengal.

Siraj-ud-Daula, the defeated Nawab of Bengal, had left Murshidabad after the battle and was trying to escape to Patna.

On June 29, Clive reached Murshidabad with 200 European soldiers and 300 sepoys.

He was received at the Nawab’s palace by Mir Jafar and his officials. Mir Jafar was placed on the throne by Clive.

Mir Jafar’s brief reign in two stints, 1757-1760 and 1763-1765, would be turbulent with the new Nawab unable to cope with the demands of the British.
