The consecration ceremony of St John’s Church took place on this day.

The church served as the Anglican Cathedral of Calcutta till 1847, after which the see was transferred to St Paul’s Cathedral. It was built next to the governor’s house on a piece of land that was donated by Maharaja Nabo Kishen Bahadur of Shovabazar to Governor-General Warren Hastings. It is the third oldest church in the city, after the Armenian Church of the Holy Nazareth and the Old Mission Church.

Modelled on St Martin-in-the-Fields of London and built by architect James Agg, St John’s Church was built with bricks and stones. It was called pathure girja in Bengali because of the use of stone.
