On this day, the Bengal Legislative Assembly met to decide the future of Bengal. The two choices were being one Bengal within India or Pakistan, or being divided into East Bengal and West Bengal, as home for Bengali Muslims and Bengali Hindus, respectively.

At the preliminary joint session, the assembly decided by 126-90 votes that in case Bengal remained united, it should join the new Constituent Assembly of Pakistan.

At a separate meeting of legislators from West Bengal, it was decided by 58-21 votes that the province should be divided and West Bengal should join the existing Constituent Assembly of India.

At another separate meeting of legislators from East Bengal, it was decided by 106-35 votes that Bengal should not be divided. But if it was, it was decided by 107-34 votes that then East Bengal should join Pakistan.
