Titled “THE LAST SLEEP” (Photo Patrika), the caption said: “Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray, the last of the great giants who made Bengal what she is today, passed away yesterday (Friday) at 6.27pm at the Science College premises which had been his home for the last nearly three decades.

“It was on this day nineteen years ago another great son of Bengal — Chittaranjan Das — breathed his last, making June 16 a memorable day in national life.

“The news of his death spread like wildfire throughout the city which was gripped in grief at the death of one who filled up a space in national life and in whom the whole nation gloried”.

Other reports on Ray followed the announcement.
