On this day, The Calcutta Gazette published the news that Baboo Sosi Bhusan Dutt, who has been a lecturer at Ravenshaw College, Cuttack, had been appointed the first lecturer of the college department of Bethune School. The day is celebrated by the college as its foundation day.

John Elliot Drinkwater Bethune had established Calcutta Female School with Raja Dakshinaranjan Mukhopadhyay, Ramgopal Ghosh and Pandit Madan Mohan Tarkalankar in 1849. This was the first school for girls in Calcutta. Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar was its first secretary. It started with 21 girls.

In 1879, Bethune College started its classes with Kadambini Bose. Soon Chandramukhi Bose joined her.

They got special scholarships of 25 and 20. In 1883, they both passed the BA examination from Bethune College and became the first women graduates of Calcutta University and in the colonial British empire.
