He worked as chaplain to the brigade at Fort William and was also put in charge of the Old Mission Church, which had been founded by John Kiernander.

Brown was instrumental in the recruitment of evangelical chaplains in India. He was also appointed provost at Fort William College.

He bought Aldeen House in Serampore in 1803. The house became a meeting place for Baptist missionaries, who were led by William Carey in Serampore, and for evangelical Anglican chaplains.

Brown had left for Madras in 1812 for sea air after his health began to fail, but the ship was wrecked and he returned to Calcutta. He did not recover his health and passed away in the city.
