On this day, the British administration in India forced Peshwa Baji Rao II to sign the Treaty of Pune.

About a decade after the conclusion of the second Anglo-Maratha war, an envoy who enjoyed British protection, Gangadhar Shastri, was sent to negotiate a revenue arrangement with the Peshwa in Pune. Shashtri was murdered.

The British suspected the Peshwa’s minister Trimbak Dengle.

The treaty forced the Peshwa to admit Dengle’s guilt and surrender to the British significant parts of his territory, which included places in Deccan, the Konkan coast, the north of the Narmada and the south of the Tungabhadra.

The Peshwa was also asked to disband his cavalry.

The treaty would be followed by the Third Anglo-Maratha War.
