On this day, Calcutta recorded the highest temperature ever at 43.9 degrees Celsius. This year, a hundred years later, the city came very close to repeating the feat.

During the heat wave that prevailed in the last week of April this year over the city and its adjoining areas, the temperature often crossed the 40-degree mark. On April 25, Calcutta recorded a maximum temperature of 41.6 degrees. On April 29, 2024, the city temperature was 41.7 degrees. The next day the mercury touched 43 degrees.

The highest recorded temperature for April in Calcutta is 43.3 degrees
in 1954.

Calcutta about to break its own record is not good news for the city’s future.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has predicted that the mean temperature of the city may go up by 4.5 degrees by the end of this century.

Global warming and El Nino contributed to the heat wave. The number of nor’westers has also reduced significantly over the years.
