Writer of children’s books Sukhalata Rao passed away on this day. She is remembered not only for her writing, but also for her illustrations, which won the appreciation of Rabindranath Tagore.

Sukhalata was the daughter of writer Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury and sister of Sukumar Ray, the great humorist.

She studied in Bethune College. She pursued her writing and drawing after her marriage to Jayanta Rao in Cuttack and some consider her to be the first comic strip writer in Bengali because of a series with illustrations and speech bubbles she had contributed to Sandesh, the popular children’s magazine started by Upendrakishore.

She wrote several delightful children’s books and was still contributing to Sandesh at the time the magazine was in the hands of Sukumar’s filmmaker son Satyajit.
