On this day, the new Nawab of Bengal, Mir Jafar, ceded the rights of 24 mahals to the British East India Company. These mahals came to be known as 24 Parganas.
The treaty by which the land was given to the British says that “all the land lying to the south of Calcutta as far as Culpee, shall be under the Zemindari of the English Company and all the officers of this Zemindari shall be under their jurisdiction. The revenue to be paid by it (the company) in the same manner with other Zemindari”, the official website of South 24-Parganas district says.
The 24 Parganas district began to take shape following the Regulation Act 1793. The district was split in 1980 and new districts were formed — North 24-Parganas and South 24-Parganas.
