Scottish Church Collegiate School was founded in the city on this day by Reverend Alexander Duff as General Assembly’s Institution.
Duff had arrived in Calcutta as the first missionary of the Church of Scotland to India. His aim was to set up an English-medium institution.
British scholars and Orientalists such as James Prinsep supported education in Indian languages, but Duff and a few eminent Indians such as Raja Rammohun Roy supported English as a medium of instruction. Duff received great support from Roy in setting up this school.
Initially, Duff was supported by Governor-General William Bentinck. The school opened at Feringhi Kamal Bose’s house in Upper Chitpore Road. In 1836, the institution was moved to Gorachand Bysack’s house at Garanhatta. Later, the school building was designed by John Gray.
The school became one of the most important educational institutions of Bengal.
