Satyabrata Aich, 84, a retired registrar general of Calcutta High Court, walked to the polling booth which is about 200 metres from his house in Aurobindo Nagar in Bijaygarh.

He cast his vote in Vijaygarh Jyotish Ray College, which is under Jadavpur constituency.

“I don’t know whether I will be able to cast my next vote. I am not keeping well. Still, I came to vote because the prevailing issues do bother me,” said Aich who also worked in the State Administrative Tribunal.

What are the issues that bother him?

“As someone who has worked in the high court, I have always believed in upholding the democratic principles. But the imposition of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) suggests that these democratic principles have been violated,” said Aich.

Aich said the absence of employment opportunities for the youths bothers him as much.

“The state of unemployment which comes out in recent survey worries us. I think a government which can create enough job opportunities must be voted to power,” he said.
