A police officer was injured in a clash between workers of the Congress and the BJP outside Bidhan Bhavan, the Congress central office at Entally here, on Thursday afternoon.
The incident occurred at 4pm when a group of BJP workers marched to Bidhan Bhavan to protest against Rahul Gandhi, who, according to the saffron camp, allegedly pushed BJP MPs during their demonstration in front of Parliament on Thursday.
According to the police, the supporters of the BJP and the Congress broke the barricade in front of Bidhan Bhavan and confronted each other.
“Both sides were hurling stones and one policeman was hit on his head. He is undergoing treatment at a hospital. His condition is stable now,” a senior police officer said.
Subhankar Sarkar, the state Congress president, said: “The Bengal BJP dreamed of capturing Bidhan Bhavan today by bringing in goons. The anti-Dalit, anti-Constitution and Manusmriti-driven BJP even tried to vandalise the statue of Bengal’s visionary leader, Bidhan Chandra Roy. Their attacks left photojournalists and policepersonnel injured.”
A senior BJP leader has rejected the Congress’s charge.
“We have initiated a nationwide protest against Rahul Gandhi for injuring two of our MPs, Pratap Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput, during their demonstration in front of Parliament. When we marched to the Congress office, their workers hurled bottles and stones at us, injuring several of our members. Police stood by as silent spectators. We strongly condemn both the Congress and the inaction of the police,” said the senior BJP leader.
