Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday asked people to be alert to trouble-makers in the backdrop of communal conflagration in northeast Delhi and asserted that riots wouldn’t take place in Bengal under her watch.

“I am sad over recent incidents in Delhi. People lost their lives and there were huge losses. Even now, bodies are being found at multiple locations. Why were so many killed for protesting against the CAA?” the Bengal chief minister asked at a public meeting at the College Ground in Kaliaganj, North Dinajpur.

“Keep a stern vigil on attempts to create trouble here. Don’t let anybody set fire to your lives. We don’t want riots, we want peace, we want to live and let live. We want the harshest punishment for anyone fomenting any sort of trouble…. But it is disappointing that none from the central government said even once that they were embarrassed over what happened. We want to make it clear that whatever has happened in Delhi can never happen in Bengal under our watch,” she added.

Mamata also held an administrative meeting of North Dinajpur district.

She has said North Dinajpur shares border with other states and Bangladesh and hence, the police should be alert.

“I would also like to mention that BSF personnel posted on the border should not enter villages in the name of community development programmes and interfere in local issues,” the chief minister said.

“Police officers posted in areas concerned should take note of it,” she added.

Trinamul fund

Trinamul’s leader in the Rajya Sabha, Derek O’Brien, said on Tuesday that Rs 10 lakh had already been pledged for a fund to assist victims of the Delhi violence. He said Mamata would give Rs 5 lakh from the royalty of her books.
