A 26-year-old woman died after she fell from the roof of the six-storied building of Malda Medical College & Hospital (MMCH) on Thursday morning.

Police suspect Sabera Khatun has committed suicide and have initiated a probe. Her body has been seized and sent for post-mortem.

Sources said Sabera, a resident of Magura village under the jurisdiction of Ratua police station of Malda district, had reached the outpatient department along with her brother Muklesar Rahaman.

“My sister was having some mental problems. I brought her to MMCH and wanted her to get examined at the psychiatry department. While I was enrolling her name, she suddenly went missing,” said the brother.

As Rahaman came out of the building, he found out that some people had gathered at a location. He went there and found Sabera lying dead.

“I have no idea whether it is an accident or she committed suicide. She had managed to climb to the roof of the building,” Rahaman added.

Some eyewitnesses said they had spotted Sabera leaning from the parapet wall of the roof. They screamed at her and also told security guards. Some guards also went up but after some time, they saw her falling from the roof. She fell and died on the spot.

A police team reached the spot. Also, officials of MMCH went there and took stock of the situation.

“Police officers are probing the case. We will increase the security and vigilance to prevent people from climbing up to the roof,” said Puranjay Saha, the MMCH superintendent.

Cannabis seized

Acting on a tip off, a team of Kotwali police station in Jalpaiguri seized 343kg of cannabis on Thursday.

Police sources said they intercepted an oil tanker on NH27 near the Teesta bridge that is on the outskirts of the town. As they searched the vehicle, they found the narcotic kept inside in gunny bags.

“The cannabis was loaded in Assam and was on to Caclutta. Two persons arrested in this connection,” sources said.
