The woman alleged a youth passed lewd remarks at her and when she protested, she was assaulted. At least two other youths were accompanying the accused, the woman mentioned in the complaint.

“We have analysed footage we got from a nearby CCTV camera and could identity one of the youths who was present at the spot. He was arrested within an hour of receiving the complaint (in the evening) and pursuing his statement, two more youths were arrested,” said deputy commissioner of police, port, Syed Waquar Raza.

Another officer later identified the accused as Rahul Sharma, 20, Sheikh Firoz, 20, and Washim Khan, 24. While Sharma and Firoz are from Bhukailash Road, Khan is a resident of Mayurbhanj Road.

In a Facebook post, the woman has alleged that she approached an “on duty police personnel” for help at the spot but he, instead of helping her, asked her to visit the nearest police station to lodge a complaint. She did not go to the police station straight away as she was on her way to office and lodged the complaint in the evening.

Officers, however, said she did not include the allegation against the cop at the spot in the complaint she lodged with South Port police station.

A senior police officer at Lalbazar said they would probe “all aspects”.

Officers investigating the case said they found out that three youths travelling in a bus had teased the woman when she was riding the scooter alongside the bus.

“At the crossing of Bhukailash Road and Remount Road, where the woman stopped at a signal, the youths got off the bus and physically harassed her,” an officer said.

Early on June 18, model Ushoshi Sengupta and the driver of the app cab she was travelling in had been heckled by a group of helmetless bikers at the Exide crossing and then at Lake Gardens.

She had approached an officer outside Maidan police station, less than 100m from the Exide crossing, but was allegedly told initially that the spot where she was heckled was under Bhowanipore police station.
