A faculty member of Raiganj University and his family members have been accused of physically and mentally tormenting his wife. On Thursday, his father-in-law filed a complaint at Raiganj police station.

Sources said Vivek Roy, an associate professor of zoology at the varsity, had married Rimu Sarkar a couple of years back.

Both Vivek and wife Rimu belong to Cooch Behar district.

“At the time of marriage, my father gave him cash and a car as dowry. Even then, my husband and the inlaws were not satisfied. They started torturing me soon after. A few days after our marriage, my husband went to his workplace, leaving me with the in-laws who went on tormenting me,” the wife alleged.

On Thursday, Rimu reached here and went to the varsity to meet her husband. “He insulted me and asked me to leave immediately,” she said.

Later at night, her father filed a complaint against Vivek, his parents and his brother, accusing them of torturing his daughter.

“We want exemplary punishment for all of them. They have tortured me for months while demanding that my father pay more money to them,” said Rimu.

Vivek didn’t attend the varsity on Friday. His cellphone was switched off throughout the day.

Parthasarathi Nandi, head of the zoology department, however, stood in his support.

“The associate professor concerned is a good teacher. I believe he is having some problems with his wife. There are, however, doubts about the allegations as they didn’t stay together,” said Nandi.

Police officers said they had spoken to Vivek’s wife. “Based on the complaint, a probe has been initiated. Our men are gathering more information about the case,” said an officer.
