The weekend is likely to be wet in Calcutta, the Met office has said.
“Scattered rain is likely in Calcutta on June 15. Fairly widespread rain is likely between June 16 and 18,” said Somenath Dutta, deputy director-general of India Meteorological Department, Calcutta.
The maximum temperature in Calcutta had shot up to 39.2 degrees on Sunday and soaring humidity made conditions unbearable. The maximum temperature has since climbed down but the humidity quotient has remained on the higher side, making 35 degrees feel like 45.
The districts of south Bengal continue to reel under a heat wave.
A Met bulletin issued on Wednesday afternoon said severe heat-wave conditions are likely in West Burdwan, Purulia and West Midnapore and heat-wave conditions are likely in Bankura and Jhargram on Thursday.
On Friday, heat-wave conditions are likely in West Burdwan, West Midnapore and Purulia.
On both days, hot and humid conditions are likely in most of the remaining districts in south Bengal.
Isolated thunderstorm activities are expected to bring momentary relief in some south Bengal districts. But Calcutta is unlikely to get rain before Saturday, said Met officials.
When south Bengal seems to be on a frying pan, north Bengal is getting drenched. The conditions are favourable for the rain to continue in north Bengal, said Met officials.
“Heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy rainfall at one or two places is very likely to continue over the northern districts of north Bengal,” the Met bulletin said.
Met officials could not give a tentative date for the monsoon’s arrival in south Bengal.
The monsoon reached north Bengal on May 31, ahead of its usual date of June 5. The usual date of its onset in south Bengal is June 10.
The northern limit of monsoon now passes through Islampur (North Dinajpur). “Before June 14, the IMD is not in a position to make a statement on the advancement into south Bengal,” said Dutta.
