Vivekananda Park on Southern Avenue continues to remain dirty though the heaps of garbage that had piled up have been removed from under the benches and along the walkway.
On Sunday, The Telegraph found dried leaves, papers and other waste still strewn around the park. Branches of trees that fell and have dried were still stacked inside.
The walkway remains battered, with stretches of it becoming slushy and slippery after rain.
This newspaper reported on June 10 about the poor condition of the park — broken benches and heaps of garbage stacked under them.
The park is home to several cricket coaching camps and hundreds of children visit the clubs every weekend for their practice.
Besides, many people visit the park in the morning and evening for their daily walk.
“Some cleaning was done earlier this month, ahead of the final match of an inter-club cricket tournament. But it was restricted to the removal of garbage that had stacked up,” said a regular visitor to the park.
“The park needs more cleaning. It should be cleaned daily or at least in regular intervals.”
Vivekananda Park houses six cricket coaching camps. Former national cricketer Jhulan Goswami had trained in one of them.
The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) had been the custodian of the park till a few months ago, when the responsibility was handed to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). The KMC is yet to start any regular maintenance work in the park.
“The KMC assigns only a few employees for the maintenance of the large parks that it manages. The job of regular cleaning of Vivekananda Park has not been assigned to anyone,” said a senior official of the KMC.
The civic body, he said, is working on a plan to improve the condition of the park. “An architect will soon be appointed to give us a plan for the improvement of the park,”he said.
Saurav Basu, the councillor of Ward 86, which includes the park, said the park would be revamped within six months. “It will not remain in this shabby condition for long,” said Basu.
“We will talk to the officials running the cricket coaching camps. They have to sign agreements with the KMC, since the civic body is now the custodian of the park,” he said. The camps had signed agreements with the KMDA.
A community hall has been built in the portion of the park where there were residential quarters, Basu said. It will be inaugurated next month.
Councillor Basu has an office in the park.
