A group of Visva-Bharati students and teachers on Sunday met the family of Class XII student Asim Das whose body was found hanging at a varsity hostel last Thursday.

Among them were Trinamul Chhatra Parishad leader Minakshi Bhattacharya, SFI leader Somnath Sow and president of the Visva-Bharati University Faculty Association Sudipta Bhattacharyya. They vowed to stand by the family till “justice was done.

On Saturday, a Trinamul delegation headed by Bolpur MLA and minister Chandranath Sinha met Asim’s family.

Varsity officials reportedly viewed these as “pressure tactics” aimed at vice-chancellor Bidyut Chakrabarty who on Friday petitioned governor Jagdeep Dhankhar for protection following a student protest over Asim’s death.

“We told the family that we will be with them till they get justice. The family has had to face inhuman behaviour following the death of their son,” said Sudipta Bhattacharyya.

Minakshi said they went to Asim’s home at Nanoor without “any political identity” as varsity authorities were trying to “brush off their responsibilities”.

Asim’s father Sanjib Das said he wanted a thorough probe.

“How can the VC specify suicide even before the post-mortem report? The VC did not even meet us,” he said.

The post-mortem report is due on Monday, students said, adding they would start a movement if it suggested murder.

Varsity officials refuted the charges and said they had contacted Asim’s family for a meeting with the VC.

A varsity official said that despite an email being sent to police on March 2 about the agitation in front of the VC’s residence, no action was taken and the VC was forced to seek help from the governor.
