A group of Trinamul Congress workers vandalised the venue of a Duare Sarkar camp in North Dinajpur district on Thursday, alleging that officials had arrived late for the programme and the number of application forms was insufficient.

Bishop Sarkar, the superintendent of police of North Dinajpur, said Trinamul leader Akbar Ali had been arrested for the vandalism at a primary school in Agdimti Khanti in Islampur block. The spot is about 125km from Raiganj.

The camp was scheduled to start at the school at 10.30am, but local Trinamul leaders alleged that government officials had arrived only around 11.30am.

“Several people were standing in the queue in the scorching heat. However, they couldn’t submit their applications because of a shortage of forms at the camp,” a local resident complained.

Ali, who had been present at the camp since the morning to assist the local people in filling up forms for respective social security schemes, resented the delay and allegedly started vandalising the camp office by throwing tables and desks.

“Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has taken the initiative to conduct this camp at booth level but only two employees reached the camp, that too late,” said Ali.

The Trinamul leader further alleged that people were confused about where they should submit the forms because of the absence of different desks.

Sagram Soren, the in-charge of the camp and a government official, said there were sufficient forms available at the camp. “The inconvenience occurred when the villagers failed to identify the respective desks for submitting their applications and some of them indulged in vandalism. But the situation was quickly brought under control.”
