The Trinamul Congress is planning to take an all-party delegation to Delhi to protest against the Centre’s decision to privatise 46 central public sector undertakings (PSUs), including 10 in Bengal.

The Bengal Assembly has passed a unanimous resolution against the Narendra Modi government’s decision.

Congress MLA Asit Mitra had suggested that an all-party delegation should go to Delhi in a bid to save “10 profit-making central PSUs” from disinvestment.

“We have received the proposal in the House…. I will speak to the chief minister and plan accordingly,” said parliamentary affairs minister Partha Chatterjee.

Unlike in the past, when the working relations between the Treasury and the Opposition benches had virtually collapsed, the current Assembly session has witnessed a never-before convergence of Trinamul and the non-BJP parties in criticising the Modi government.

On the issue of protesting the Centre’s disinvestment decision, Chatterjee, along with leader of the Opposition Abdul Mannan of the Congress and Left legislature party leader Sujan Chakraborty, jointly moved a motion in the last hour of the budget session on Thursday. The BJP MLAs in the House didn’t protest.

“Profit-making central PSUs in the state, like Bengal Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Bridge and Roof Co. (India) Ltd, Burn Standard Company Ltd, Alloy Steels Plant, National Textile Corporation Ltd (Arati Cotton Mills) and Ferro Scrap Nigam Ltd, provide employment opportunities to thousands of people. They also generate revenues for the government. What’s the point of disinvesting them?” asked Chakraborty.

He said the Left parties would join the all-party delegation.
