The Union home ministry has sought a report from the Bengal government on alleged fabricated cases registered against leaders and workers of Opposition parties in the state.
The letter dated March 10 became public on Friday after sources in the BJP shared a copy of it with journalists.
Undersigned by Mrutyunjay Tripathy, an under-secretary to the Union government, the letter reads that the Prime Minister’s Office has written to the home ministry and forwarded a letter written by BJP MLA and leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, in which he alleged filing of “false and fabricated” cases against Opposition leaders and party workers by the Bengal government.
Adhikari had written to the PMO on November 29, 2022.
“As the issue raised in the petition is concerned with the Government of West Bengal, it is requested that the matter may please be looked into appropriately and a report in the matter may please be furnished to the Ministry immediately,” the letter states.
In July 2021, Adhikari alleged he was being subjected to “political vendetta” as a party leader in the Opposition, and that false cases were being filed against him.
He had approached Calcutta High Court seeking an order to quash the FIRs against him and pleaded that criminal cases against him be transferred to the CBI for an “impartial investigation”.
