Mamata Banerjee on Friday told the Bengal Assembly that she “felt bad” for not being invited to the inauguration of the East-West Metro corridor, recalling how she had to “shed tears” as the railway minister a decade back to get the project sanctioned.

The Bengal chief minister, during her address to the House in a discussion on the gubernatorial speech at the start of the ongoing budget session, said “kharap lagey (feels bad)” while referring to her name being omitted from the advertisement released by the railways for the Thursday event.

“We had worked very hard for the East-West Metro. It was not easy. I had to shed tears for it back then,” said Mamata, who was the railway minister between 2009 and 2011.

“Of course, kharap lagey…. After everything was done for them, before the inauguration of that small (4.88km stretch between Sector V and Salt Lake Stadium) stretch, they did not even feel the need to let me know. I felt bad. But it is up to them,” she added.

BJP state unit chief Dilip Ghosh, however, said Mamata was paying for her “past sins”.

“Between 2009 and 2011, she accorded immense disrespect to then chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and others in his government. After coming to power, she made a practice of leaving Opposition lawmakers out of almost everything her government conducts,” said Ghosh.

“As you sow, so you reap. She is the last person who should be talking about taking umbrage at such things,” he added.
