The under-construction flyover on Burdwan Road, a prominent artery here, will be opened in December, Gautam Deb, the mayor of Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC), said on Thursday.
“The state PWD is executing the project for the 1.2km-long flyover at Burdwan Road. It is a ₹100-crore project and by December it will be opened for vehicular movement. The PWD has also taken the task to widen the road on both sides of the flyover to ease the movement of vehicles,” said Deb.
The flyover, over the railway tracks that connect Siliguri Town and Siliguri Junction stations, will largely help in easing traffic movement along the Burdwan Road, which connects the southern parts of the city, the Asian Highway II and NH-27.
Sources in PWD said they will widen around 12 feet of the existing road on both flanks between the two prominent crossings Jhankar More and Naukaghat More.
On Thursday, a team of Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES), handed over the feasibility report of a proposed alternative road and a bridge. The road has been planned to reduce congestion in the city.
The mayor said they had engaged RITES to conduct a feasibility survey for the construction of the alternative road and bridge. The plan is to build a 3.5km-long road that will connect Sevoke Road and Hill Cart Road, the two major thoroughfares of the city through Dasarathpally and Surya Sen Park. A 70mt-long bridge will also be built along the route.
