Trinamul Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee’s sister-in-law Maneka Gambhir was questioned for around seven hours late on Monday evening by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case linked to alleged coal smuggling.
Earlier in the morning, Gambhir had gone to the ED office at 12.30am as was mentioned in the summons that she had been served with by the central agency at the Calcutta airport on Saturday.
Officials in the central agency said it was a “typographical” error, following which a fresh summons had been issued asking Gambhir to make herself present in the ED office at 12.30pm on Monday. Gambhir reached the CGO complex around 12.40pm.
Earlier, Gambhir and her lawyer had gone to the ED office at 12.30am but had to return home as it had been found locked. Gambhir apparently posed for a photograph in front of the closed ED office with a copy of the summons in her hand. After the interrogation, Gambhir stepped out of the CGO complex around 7.30pm and ran into her car, apparently to avoid getting drenched in the rain. She did not respond to queries by newspersons.
ED officials said Gambhir might be summoned again if needed. On Saturday, she was stopped from flying abroad citing a lookout notice against her following which she was served with a summons by the ED. In August, Calcutta High Court had directed the central agency to quiz Gambhir at its regional office in Calcutta, instead of Delhi, where she had initially been summoned.
The court had also ordered the ED not to take coercive steps against her till the next date of hearing. The central agency had earlier questioned Abhishek Banerjee, the nephew of Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and the national general secretary of Trinamul, and his wife Rujira, in the same case.
