Police sources said the duo, along with some others, had been to the weekly rural market in Chamurchi to sell their produce.

After the market wound up, they took a pick-up van to return home with relatives and some others.

When the vehicle reached Palashbari tea estate in Banarhat block, it rammed into the rear of a parked truck that was loaded with stones on the road around 9pm.

Jainul and Bibhash died on the spot.

At least three others, including Jainul’s brother, suffered severe injuries. All of them were rushed to the Malbazar super-specialty hospital.

On Monday, Jainul’s brother was shifted to a private nursing home in Siliguri when his condition deteriorated.

He is reported to be in a critical condition.

Police have seized both the vehicles and started to investigate the reason behind the accident. It is being ascertained whether the driver of the van lost control of the vehicle or poor visibility prevented him from seeing the truck parked on the road.
