Multiple flashes of lightning were seen and thunderclaps were heard by residents of this area around 4pm, the officer quoting residents said.

“The boys, however, continued to play,” the officer said.

The police identified the dead as Shafikul Islam, 17, and Jamir Hossein, 19.

They fell flat on their faces on the playground as the lightning struck the field. The two other youths were lying unconscious with blood oozing out of their ears.

Residents alerted Tapas Chatterjee, the Trinamool Congress MLA from Rajarhat-New Town. Chatterjee sent two of the boys to a private hospital near Chinar Park where they were declared dead.

The injured teenagers were sent to RG Kar hospital.

A senior RG Kar official said the two have been admitted to the critical care unit of the hospital. “Both of them have suffered burns and were bleeding from their noses,” said the official.
