Mamata Banerjee is all set to launch a fresh bid to win back the support of the Matuas with two rallies in Bongaon and Ranaghat on Tuesday afternoon, nearly nine months after Trinamul suffered a major setback in the general election in the community’s stronghold of Nadia and North 24-Parganas.

The first rally — part of her movement against the Narendra Modi government’s citizenship thrusts — will be held at the Bongaon Stadium. The second meeting will take place at the Habibpur Chhatimtala ground near Ranaghat.

The chief minister will be visiting both the places for the first time since the Lok Sabha poll debacle in the Matua bastion. Trinamul had lost both the Ranaghat and Bongaon Lok Sabha seats to the BJP. In both the constituencies, Matuas form around 45 per cent of the electorate.

After the passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, Trinamul has been highlighting the concerns of Matuas.

“Citizenship is a big issue for Matuas, for which they have leaned towards the BJP. But we have launched a campaign against the CAA in the community, explaining that the provisions of the overall citizenship matrix comprising the CAA, NPR and the NRC will not only render them outsiders for at least five years but also immensely harass the masses with the processes of furnishing documents,” said a Bongaon-based Trinamul leader.

Mamata will start her two-day visit to North 24-Parganas and Nadia with the rallies, before concluding with an administrative meeting and a closed-door interaction with 40,000-odd booth-level Trinamul workers at Krishnagar on Wednesday.

The Trinamul leadership of the two districts has chalked out a plan to bring massive Matua crowds to both the rallies. The booth committees of the party in 20 Matua-dominated Assembly segments of the two districts were directed to mobilise Matuas in large numbers.

Trinamul’s North 24-Parganas district president Jyotipriya Mullick said the chief minister would punch holes in the claims of the BJP’s propaganda machinery with regard to the CAA. “We are hopeful of winning back the support of Matuas, who were simply misled by the BJP,” said Mullick.

“At least 1.5 lakh people are going to attend the meeting,” he added.

A senior Trinamul leader said Mamata’s interaction with the booth-level workers would be the first of its kind.

“She is looking at addressing issues such as internal bickering and the growing influence of the BJP. The meet is aimed at boosting workers’ confidence and timely rectification measures in the organisation ahead of the civic polls,” said the leader.
