Two Trinamul lobbies headed by Abdul Haque, a member of the panchayat, and Jahidul Rehman, often attack each other to gain control over the area.

On Friday morning, some of Rehman’s followers reached Haque’s house in Kamargach village and allegedly demanded money from his family.

When Haque’s family members raised a protest, they were attacked with sharp weapons by those from Rehman’s group. Anjuma Khatun, Haque’s wife, was injured as she was slashed with a knife. Another person was also injured in the attack. The assailants then fled the spot.

The duo were rushed to the Islampur subdivisional hospital where they are under treatment.

Trinamul supporters allegiant to Haque gathered at the village following the attack. Islampur police arrived and brought the situation under control.

Police were posted in the area.

Kanaialal Agarwala, the district Trinamul president, has denied that the party is in the grip of factionalism. “We don’t have differences within the party. It was an undesirable incident. We asked police to nab all attackers.”
