On July 15, the Pradhannagar police had busted a racket and arrested three persons, including a woman, for offering people jobs in the state police in exchange of money. The trio were identified as Chandra Das, Bishu Das and Laxman Choudhury.

During preliminary probe, it was found that the trio had swindled 18 youths and collected around Rs 10 lakh by assuring them jobs. The police had seized two diaries containing details about the money collected from the “recruits”, along with documents from the houses of Chandra and Bishu.

“Today (on Tuesday), a team went to Balurghat to find out about others associated with the racket. Two persons, one of whom is the mastermind of the racket have been held,” said Kunwar Bhusan, a deputy commissioner of Siliguri metropolitan police.

A police officer said: “Police uniforms were found from Laxman’s house.”

Both Partha and Alok, arrested on Tuesday, have been brought to Siliguri. “They would be interrogated for further information,” the officer added.

Timber seized

The foresters of the Belakoba range of Baikunthapur forest division seized illegal Burmese teak logs from a truck near Rajganj block of Jalpaiguri district on Tuesday.

Sources said the foresters intercepted a truck on NH27 near Karatowa. “It was loaded with cement bags to hoodwink us. As we removed the bags, the teak logs were found,” said a forest officer.

According to the forester, the timber was loaded somewhere in Assam. The cost of the seized logs is around Rs 20 lakh. The truck has been seized and its driver arrested.
