Two migrant workers from Chanchal in Malda were shot at by suspected terrorists in Kashmir’s Nowgam under Budgam district on Friday evening.

Najimul Hoque, 22, of Hazratpur and his brother-in-law Anikul Islam, 27, of Balarampur are under treatment at a hospital in Srinagar.

Their family members have pleaded to the state government to arrange their return and get them hospitalised in Bengal.

Sources said that around 7pm on Friday Anikul and Najimul were strolling near the building they live in and talking to their wives over phone when four persons on two-wheelers opened fire.

Both Anikul and Najimul were injured.

Later, other workers rushed them to hospital.

Merina Bibi, Anikul’s wife, said he was on the phone saying he would be home on Id when she heard sounds of gunfire and he stopped talking. The duo used to work in an apple orchard, she added.

According to family members, Anikul received bullets on his head and neck Najimul on his back and abdomen.

On Saturday, Abdur Rahim Boxi, the local MLA and Trinamul’s district president in Malda, met the families.

“They have urged us to bring them back to Bengal for treatment. We have spoken with co-workers who are equally scared. I have requested the state government help these families,” said Boxi.

Police in Malda’s Chanchal said they are trying to contact their counterparts in Kashmir.
