A woman and her friend were arrested in Baguiati on Wednesday on attempt to murder charges in connection with their friend’s fall from the rooftop of a four-storey building on Tuesday.
Police said the arrested — Tania Mondal, 35, and Debasish Roy, 35, — and the injured person, Prasanta Roy, were childhood friends.
Roy, 38, was found lying in a pool of blood in front of the building in Arjunpur around 10.30pm. The three had arranged a get-together on the rooftop, the police said.
Roy has been admitted to RG Kar hospital with pelvic and head injuries. Doctors on Thursday said his condition was critical.
Mondal is a nurse based in Varanasi and Debasish Roy is on the cleaning staff of a municipality, the police said.
“The two were arrested based on a complaint filed by Priya, wife of the injured. She alleged they had pushed her husband off the rooftop,” an officer of Baguiati police station said. “The two have been sent to four days’ police custody.”
Some people of the area alerted a police team on night patrol before taking Roy, who owns a vegetable shop, to the hospital. A few said his two friends had accompanied them to the hospital. They apparently told the men that Roy had an accidental fall.
Preliminary investigations showed the three were from Arjunpur and they had decided to catch up on Tuesday night. They had ordered food from a restaurant and brought a music system for the party.
Mondal, a divorcee, probably stayed on rent in a flat in the building where the party had been organised on the rooftop, the officer said. She had been living in the flat for the past few months, he said.
The police suspect both men were vying for Mondal’s attention and it could have led to a scuffle and Roy’s fall from the rooftop.
