Two persons were arrested after firearms and crude bombs were seized from their possession at Panighata More area of Bagdogra, located on the outskirts of Siliguri, on Sunday evening.
The special operation group of the Siliguri Metropolitan Police and a team of Bagdogra police station intercepted the duo — identified as Sankar Adhikary, a resident of Kachakali, and Apu Paik of Dhiagarh, both located under Chopra police station of North Dinajpur district — at Panighata More in Bagdogra.
“As they were frisked, an improvised firearm with two rounds of live cartridges, four socket bombs and a bottle of suspected liquid explosive were seized from their possession. We will interrogate them to find out from where they had obtained these items,” said a police officer.
In another incident, police seized 50 boxes of Bhutan made foreign liquor from an ambulance at a railway level crossing at Birpara in Alipurduar district on Sunday night.
According to sources, the cost of the seized liquor is estimated at Rs 8 lakh, said.
The sources said the ambulance was moving through the area flashing a blue beacon. “The cops intercepted the vehicle when they didn’t notice any patient in the ambulance. They found the liquor boxes and arrested the driver as he could not furnish any document to prove that
he is legally carrying the liquor. The vehicle has also been seized,”said a senior police officer.
“Those engaged in illicit liquor selling seem to have coined a new way to bring in liquor from Bhutan by using ambulances. An alert message has been passed to all police stations of the district to prevent entry of Bhutan made liquor,” the senior police officer added.
