Two arrested with brown sugar worth Rs 1.40 crore

A couple was arrested after brown sugar worth around Rs 1.40 crore was seized from them here on Monday.

The special operation group of the Siliguri Metropolitan Police and a team of Bagdogra police station raided the house of the couple at Biswas Colony, a locality in Matigara, and seized around 540 grams of brown sugar, a derivative of heroin.

The arrested duo have been identified as Munni Biswas and Pawan Biswas.

In another incident, a team of Dhupguri police station in Jalpaiguri district seized an improvised pistol and one round of live cartridge from Binoy Saha More of Dhupguri block and arrested a person in this connection.

The arrested youth has been identified as Nabiul Hossain, a resident of Uttar Altagram.

In the past 10 days, three illegal firearms have been seized from the block.

Also, troops of 61 battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) posted at the IndiaBangladesh border in Bhimpur border outpost of South Dinajpur, intercepted two Indian nationals with Rs 7.21 lakh on Monday.

Rani Das and Mintu Mondal, both residents of a village under Hilli police station, had collected the money in exchange for smuggling gold, BSF sources said.

Moreover, the 135 battalion of the force apprehended a suspected smuggler while he was trying to smuggle cattle to Bangladesh on Monday.

The arrested youth has been identified as Ajhar Hussain, a resident of Dangapara village under Islampur police station of North Dinajpur district.

All the three have been handed over to the police.

On Tuesday, the BSF carried out raids in different areas along the IndoBangla border and seized a number of contraband items which were about to be smuggled to Bangladesh. The cost of the seized items is Rs 8.68 lakh, BSF sources said.
