Two arrested in Siliguri with brown sugar

Police sources said Mosidur Rahaman from Malda and Anowara Khatun from Islampur in North Dinajpur were suspected to be members of a drug peddling racket

The special operation group of Siliguri Metropolitan Police arrested two persons, including a woman, from near Siliguri Junction on Thursday and seized narcotic worth around Rs 1.20 crore from them.

Police sources said Mosidur Rahaman from Malda and Anowara Khatun from Islampur in North Dinajpur were suspected to be members of a drug peddling racket.

They were staying at Biswas Colony under Matigara police station. The police arrested the duo after receiving a tip-off.

The SOG team recovered 1.1kg of brown sugar (a derivative of heroin) and Rs 3 lakh in cash from the two.

Arms seized

The Border Security Force posted along the Bangladesh frontier arrested two persons from different locations of north Bengal in the past 48 hours and seized firearms.

On Wednesday, personnel of 152 battalion of the BSF carried out a special operation at Amaljhari village under Islampur police station of North Dinajpur district and arrested Jahangir, a resident of a neighbouring village, and seized an improvised pistol from him.

Troops of the BSF’s 174 battalion on Thursday arrested Suboth Sarkar, a resident of Swargoda village under Kushmandi police station of South Dinajpur. A similar firearm with one round of live cartridge was seized from him.

Both have been handed over to police. The BSF also carried out raids at various places of the region in the past 24 hours and seized contraband items worth Rs 2.97 lakh.

IT Raid

The income tax department conducted raids at 27 locations in various places of north Bengal on Thursday and Friday. In Siliguri, raids were conducted in Station Feeder Road and Khalpara. The raids were conducted at Falakata, Dhupguri, Islampur and Naxalbari also. Cash, valuables and documents have been seized during the raids, said sources.
