Trucks collide, two die on spot

Fatality strikes at Baniajhora bridge on NH31C in Alipurduar district

The driver and the cleaner of a truck died in an accident near Baniajhora bridge on NH31C in Alipurduar district on Monday night.

Sources said two trucks were bound for Assam when one hit the other in front.

A team from the Hasimara police outpost reached the spot and found that the driver and the cleaner of the truck that rammed into the first one were critical. Both were rushed to the rural health centre in Latabari of Kalchini block but the doctors pronounced them dead. The deceased were from Bihar, said sources.

A pick-up van rammed into a truck on Asian Highway 40. The injured van driver has been admitted to the Alipurduar district hospital.

Arrests

The detective department of Siliguri Metropolitan Police has arrested a person from Matigara and seized cough syrups and sedatives from him on Monday.

The raid was conducted at Khalaibaktari that is in Siliguri outskirts. Around 700 bottles of cough syrup and 9,360 capsules were found stored in a garage.

Raja Hashemi, a resident of Gurungbusty in Siliguri, was arrested in this connection.

In another incident, the police of New Jalpaiguri police station arrested two motorbike lifters from Bhaktinagar on Monday. The arrested Ranjit Das and Shakti Das are from Ghogomali. Three stolen two-wheelers have been recovered from them.
