An assistant sub-inspector of the intelligence wing of Basirhat police district was killed when a mini-truck carrying vegetables ran over him after hitting his motorcycle on Mogra bridge near Baduria town in North 24-Parganas district on Thursday morning.

Subrata Halder, 49, a resident of Ashoknagar, suffered head injuries and died on the spot despite wearing a helmet. Some local people took him to Rudrapur health centre where he was pronounced brought dead.

The deceased cop was posted at the Baduria police station as an intelligence wing officer.

The accident occurred around 10.30 am on the Basirhat-Bongaon state highway when the speeding killer vehicle hit the rear end of the officer’s motorbike and run over him after he fell on the ground.

Police sources said the cop was wearing a helmet but the wheels of the speeding vehicle ran over his head. Police later seized the vehicle. However, its driver managed to flee from the spot.

Baduria police have started a suo moto case against the driver of the vehicle for reckless driving and for causing death by negligence.

An officer of Baduria police station said: “A probe has begun. We are hopeful to nab the absconding driver of the killer vehicle.”

Local residents have blamed the police for inaction against errant drivers as one of the key reasons behind the accident.

“It is unfortunate that police seldom take action against errant drivers. A section of police personnel appear more interested in taking bribes from errant drivers than taking action against speeding goods vehicles that put the lives of pedestrians and motorcyclists in peril,” a Baduria resident, who refused to be identified, said.
