The Trinamul Congress on Friday released its lists of candidates for 107 of the 108 municipalities — except the Darjeeling civic body — going to the polls on February 27, largely adhering to its “one person, one post” policy and without fielding multiple candidates from a family.
Releasing the lists at a news conference, Trinamul state chief Subrata Bakshi and secretary-general Partha Chatterjee said those not being fielded by the party should neither voice their discontent in public nor work against the interests of the organisation.
Chatterjee underscored that no sitting MLA was fielded and multiple members of the same family did not get nominations. Both were in keeping with policy recommendations of poll consultant Prashant Kishor — that were not adhered to in selection of candidates for civic corporation polls in Calcutta and four other towns.
The ruling party accidentally released soft copies of a “preliminary” list — circulated widely — that prompted expression of displeasure in several districts, especially in north Bengal. It released the “final” list for the 107 bodies later in the evening.
“We are optimistic that none will publicly voice displeasure or do anything untoward. It won’t be tolerated…. Everyone must work for the party and its cause,” said the secretary-general, adding that the party had struck a balance between the old and the new. Sources in the party said Mamata issued stern instructions to nip in the bud the tendency of dissenters fielding themselves as Independents, with hopes of being welcomed should they emerge victorious.
“Our supreme leader (Mamata Banerjee) went through every name, approving the lists, before their release,” said Chatterjee.
