Trinamul leaders in Jalpaiguri district have decided to centre their campaign on the Centre’s citizenship thrusts ahead of the civic elections.
On Sunday, the party published a booklet that mentions the adverse impact of the National Register of Citizens and the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. It would be distributed among people in Jalpaiguri town and some other areas of the district.
“People are scared that their citizenship is going to be taken away in the NRC and the CAA. So, this is a basic issue for the next civic election and requires elaboration. Our workers would be visiting door to door and distribute the booklet that explains how the NRC and the CAA are threats to the citizenship of the people of India,” district Trinamul chief K.K. Kalyani said after publishing the booklet.
“Trinamul workers have been asked not to waste time and start the campaign right from Monday,” he added.
Elections to the municipalities in Jalpaiguri, Dhupguri and Malbazar are round the corner.
“In due course, our workers will also take up the campaign in all seven blocks of the district, that is, in the rural areas,” said Kalyani.
The final list of reservation of seats in the three municipalities will be published on Monday.
Publication of such a booklet and its use as a campaign tool are considered to be significant.
Along with the NRC and the CAA, other issues like demonetisation drive and its effect, GST and its influence on traders and the sale of shares of Air India and the LICI have found mention in the booklet.
It would help the party build up opinion against the BJP, feel Trinamul leaders.
This is, however, the first phase of their campaign, they said.
In subsequent phases, local and civic issues would be raised with equal importance, the leaders mentioned.
Bapi Goswami, the district BJP chief, said: “We have already launched a campaign in favour of the NRC and the CAA. Trinamul will not succeed in misleading people about these issues,” he said.
Salil Acharya, the district Left Front convener, and Nirmal Ghosh Dastidar, the district Congress president, said they would highlight the failure of the Trinamul-run civic boards during their campaign.
