A Trinamul delegation of six lawmakers, led by Dum Dum MP Saugata Roy, met the Election Commission of India on Monday and complained against the recent arrest of the party’s national spokesperson Saket Gokhale by Gujarat police when the poll panel was in charge of administrative machinery amid Assembly elections.
They met chief election commissioner Rajiv Kumar to formally file Trinamul’s protest. “We met the CEC over the harassment and torture our national spokesperson has been subjected to. We told him he was arrested… while the model code of conduct was in force,” said Roy.
Roy apart, the delegation comprised Rajya Sabha members Mausam Noor, Sukhendu Sekhar Ray and Derek O’Brien, Serampore MP Kalyan Banerjee and Jaynagar MP Pratima Mondal.
Gujarat police last week picked up Gokhale from Jaipur over a tweet on Prime Minister Narendra Modis visit to Morbi in the wake of the bridge collapse. “The CEC promised us that he would seek a report and take necessary action,” said Roy.
