Mamata Banerjee on Monday announced a series of programmes by the Trinamul Congress in the next few months to take the party’s message to the common people.

The chief minister has announced the plan — apparently intended to combat the BJP which has already undertaken few agitation programmes against the state government — after holding a meeting with Trinamul MLAs at a Nabanna auditorium

“All our leaders — from the block level to the state level — will take part in different programmes, including the agitation against the Centre’s policy that caused the rise of LPG price. Our MPs and MLAs will undertake door-to-door campaigns to take our message to the common people,” Mamata said.

The chief minister’s message to the party MLAs was clear — get out of the comfort zones and reach out to common people. The process, sources said, would make Trinamul visible among common people.

“She laid stress on the issue. In politics, one should remain visible to remain relevant. The chief minister reminded leaders about the truth,” said an MLA.

Trinamul insiders said there was a sign in the last year’s panchayat polls that party leaders were having a communication gap with the common people, especially in the Jungle Mahal and parts of north Bengal, because of rampant corruption and alleged extortion. “But we had ignored it. As the chief minister has noticed it this time, it is a good sign for the party,” said an MLA.
