The Trinamul Congress is projecting JNU students’ union president Aishe Ghosh as “Bengal’s girl” and has demanded an impartial probe into the attack on her.
Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya, who is also the state president of the Trinamul Mahila Congress, spoke highly of Aishe at a party workers’ meeting in Cooch Behar on Saturday. “Aishe is one of our strong daughters whose vehement protest is echoing across the country. She is from our state and being a mother of Bengal, I feel it is a matter of pride for us,” Bhattacharya said.
Aishe had to be administered 16 stitches on her forehead after being hit repeatedly on the head with iron rods during the attack by suspected ABVP activists on JNU students protesting a hostel fee hike
Asked about the role of Delhi police in the JNU episode, Bhattacharya said: “We feel there should be a comprehensive and impartial probe to find out who the attackers were. I don’t know what are the findings so far. But Aishe’s protests have proved that this girl from Bengal is not ready to lower her voice under any circumstances.”
Sections in Trinamul believe that by expressing solidarity with Aishe, the party will be taking up the cause of students and youths.
“She might represent the students’ front of a different political party (the CPM-affiliated SFI) but there is nothing wrong in expressing support for her movement as the issues she has raised are rational. Also, we have witnessed how students throughout Bengal have protested the attack on her and the vandalism at JNU. In such a situation, we must stand by Aishe,” a Trinamul insider said.
