A Howrah Trinamul Congress councillor’s husband was arrested on Saturday, which triggered several rounds of violence in Shibpur that culminated in protesters rampaging through the local police station compound at night.
The arrested Shamim Ahmed, the Trinamul Congress president of Ward 36 of the Howrah Municipal Corporation, has been accused of attacking a promoter, Javed Qureshi, at his home near the Shibpur tram depot on Friday.
Ahmed is the husband of Shamima Begum, the councillor of Ward 36 of the Howrah corporation.
Allegations had surfaced that Ahmed and his supporters had attacked Qureshi’s home, hurled bombs and tried to kill the promoter.
Police said they have visual evidence that suggested Ahmed and his men had opened fire and hurled stones and bombs at the Qureshi residence on Friday. Qureshi’s wife had a close shave.
Based on a complaint lodged by Qureshi on Saturday morning, Ahmed was arrested by Howrah police on Saturday evening. He has been charged with attempt to murder and under sections of the arms act.
However, following his arrest, his supporters stormed the police station and vandalised the police station compound.
CCTV footage that surfaced late at night showed some people who are part of the protesting crowd opening fire repeatedly.
Howrah city police commissioner Tanmoy Roy Chowdhury could not be contacted by this newspaper for comment.
As the violence spilled on the roads, shops closed down on GT Road and residents of the neighbourhood took shelter indoors.
“We all know it’s an old dispute. But they are fighting on the road now. It’s too risky to step outside,” said a resident of Shibpur.
The police as well as the Rapid Action Force have been deployed on the roads under the leadership of senior officers of Howrah city police to regain normality.
Police sources said raids were being conducted till late at night to arrest the vandals.
Ahmed will be produced in a court on Sunday.
