Bengal transport minister Suvendu Adhikari and Trinamul Congress MLAs Ardhendu Maity and Amiya Bhattacharya on Tuesday visited the Christian community hall that had been ransacked by alleged BJP-linked miscreants in East Midnapore’s Bhagabanpur on Saturday.
The Trinamul leaders handed over an envelope containing Rs 2 lakh in cash to pastor Anup Kumar Ghosh who was the chief organiser of the hall’s inauguration during which the vandalism occurred.
“I was in Purulia yesterday (Monday) when the chief minister learnt of this horrific incident. She instructed me to come here immediately and hand over the cash to help with the repair,” Adhikari told reporters on Tuesday.
On Monday, East Midnapore police said prima facie “people linked to the BJP and RSS” had carried out the attack.
“Police are still searching for 11 other culprits. We want them to deliver justice as quickly as possible,” Adhikari said.
“Such an attack during the Christian festive season has never happened in Bengal. Maybe in Delhi or Odisha, but not in Bengal,” he added.
Asked about the alleged political angle to the attack, Adhikari said: “I am a Hindu and this faith has never dictated violence. Please don’t bring politics to an act committed by anti-socials.”
A mob chanting “Jai Sri Ram” slogans had attacked the community hall and planted saffron flags with “Om” inscribed on them at the community hall.
